Calheta is not a single strip. The municipality runs from the Atlantic to a 1,400 m plateau across eight parishes, and where you sleep decides whether your holiday is a beach one, a rural one or a walking one. All three work; they are not interchangeable.
Which part should you stay in?

Vila da Calheta

On the sand, beside the marina, with everything walkable.
The shelf at sea level holding the beach, the marina, the parish church and the rum mill. Two Savoy Signature hotels dominate the accommodation here, one five-star and one four-star all-inclusive, with apartments behind them.
It is the easy base: step out to the sand, eat on the quay, and drive up to the levadas in the morning. It is also the busiest part of the municipality, which on this coast still means quiet by island standards.

The terraces above
Quintas and cottages in the banana and vine terraces, with the view down.
A few hundred metres of altitude changes the stay completely: restored quintas, vineyard cottages and small country inns among working terraces, with the coast laid out below and the MUDAS museum on the ridge.
You need a car, and you will use it. In exchange you get the quiet, the view, and a much better sense of what this coast actually does for a living.

Prazeres, Jardim do Mar & Paul do Mar
The west
Cliff villages and surf, at the far end of the island.
Fifteen to twenty minutes west, the coast turns severe: Jardim do Mar on its shelf below the cliffs, Paul do Mar pinned against a wall of rock, Prazeres on the plateau above them both. Accommodation here is small-scale, guesthouses, apartments, one large walkers' hotel.
This is the base for walking and for surf-watching rather than for swimming. The nearest calm water is the engineered beach back in Calheta.

Where should I stay for a first visit to Calheta?+
The seafront. You are on the beach, next to the marina restaurants, and a few hundred metres from the rum mill and the church, and still only 35–40 minutes from the Rabaçal trailhead.
Which part of Calheta is quietest?+
The western parishes, Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar and Prazeres, are the quietest, followed by the terraces above the town. Neither has a calm swimming beach.
Where should I stay to walk the levadas?+
Anywhere in the municipality, with a car. Rabaçal is about 35–40 minutes from the seafront and there is no accommodation at the trailhead itself; the plateau has no village.
Is Calheta walkable?+
The seafront is. The municipality is not. It spans eight parishes and 1,400 m of altitude, and the bus service is not frequent enough to substitute for a car.
Is Calheta good for families?+
Yes, unusually so for Madeira. The enclosed golden-sand beach is the only calm, sandy, lifeguarded bathing on this side of the island, and the seafront is flat and traffic-light.
