Surfing at Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar

Two of Madeira's serious breaks sit inside the Calheta municipality. Jardim do Mar's right-hand point drew international surfers from the 1990s, though a sea wall built in the early 2000s changed the wave and the change is still argued over; Paul do Mar takes the most exposed swell on the coast. Neither is a beginner spot, for a first lesson, the island's schools work elsewhere.
