Funchal
The island's only city: restaurants that stay open late, museums, the Mercado dos Lavradores, the cable car to Monte, the wine lodges, and the cruise terminal. It is also central, so nothing on the island is more than about ninety minutes away.
Choose Funchal if you want evenings out, you are not hiring a car, or you want to reach the east of the island as easily as the west.
Calheta
The sunniest, driest coast; the only calm sand beach on this side of the island; a working sugar-cane rum mill; a serious piece of contemporary architecture in the MUDAS museum; and the Rabaçal levada trailheads 35–40 minutes up the road inside the same municipality.
Choose Calheta if you want the west of the island, a beach that works for children, and a quiet evening. Do not choose it for nightlife. The quay empties early and the island's late night is in Funchal.
