Two days covers Calheta. Four or five covers the west of Madeira from Calheta, which is the better reason to be here.
Two days: the town and one levada
Day one at sea level. Praia da Calheta in the morning, before the coach groups; the Engenho da Calheta sugar-cane mill, which is free to walk into and pours poncha made with rum distilled on the premises; the parish church and its Mudéjar knot-work ceiling; and the MUDAS contemporary art museum on the headland above, which is worth the climb for Paulo David's basalt building alone. Dinner on the marina, facing west.
Day two at altitude. Drive up to Rabaçal for the Levada das 25 Fontes, booked in advance through the regional SIMplifica system, and add the short branch to the Risco waterfall. Come back over Paul da Serra, and drop west in the afternoon to Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar.
That is a complete short visit, and it demonstrates the thing this coast is actually about: 1,400 m of altitude and two different weathers inside half an hour's drive.
Four to five days: the west of the island
Add:
- Porto Moniz for the volcanic natural pools, 40 minutes across the plateau, the exact opposite of Calheta's imported sand.
- Fanal, the ancient laurel wood on the ridge, best in fog.
- Ponta do Pargo, the island's western cape, where the light sits about 312 m above the sea.
- Funchal, 35–50 minutes east, for a day of market, cable car and wine lodges.
- A second levada, or a cetacean trip out of the marina.
A week
A week here is not padding, provided you have a car. Seixal, Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão and Pico do Arieiro all fit, and you will start planning days around the cloud rather than the calendar, which is the local skill.
What Calheta is not
It is not a nightlife base, and it is not Funchal. If your ideal evening ends after midnight, stay in the capital and visit this coast on day trips instead.

Is two days enough for Calheta? For the town and one levada, yes. For the west of the island, no. That needs four or five.
How many days do you need on Madeira overall? A week is the common answer, and Calheta works well as the base for three or four of them if you want the west rather than the capital.
Can you do Calheta without a car? The seafront, yes. The levadas and the west-coast villages, realistically no. The bus service is too infrequent.
What is the one thing to book in advance? The levada slot. Madeira's marked PR trails are booked and paid for through SIMplifica, and summer mornings go days ahead.
