The Levada das 25 Fontes is the most walked trail on Madeira, and it starts inside the Calheta municipality. That proximity is the main practical advantage of staying on this coast, and it does not exempt you from booking.
Booking
Madeira's marked PR trails, including PR6 (25 Fontes) and PR6.1 (Levada do Risco), are booked and paid for in advance through the regional SIMplifica system. There is a per-person trail fee, and slots for summer mornings go days ahead.
Book before you travel if your dates are fixed in July or August. Outside peak, a day or two ahead is usually enough, but "usually" is doing work in that sentence, and there is no walk-up fallback.
The walk
PR6 runs about 11 km there and back with roughly 320 m of ascent, and most walkers take three to four hours. The path follows a hand-cut irrigation channel through UNESCO-listed laurisilva to an amphitheatre of rock where a scatter of springs runs down the wall into a green pool.
PR6.1, the Levada do Risco, is the short, close-to-level branch to a viewpoint facing the Risco waterfall, around 100 m of water threading down a vertical face. It shares the first stretch with PR6, so most people do both.
Swimming at the 25 Fontes pool is not permitted.
Getting there from Calheta
Drive up to Rabaçal off the ER105 across Paul da Serra, about 25 km and 35–40 minutes, climbing from sea level to roughly 1,300 m. Park at the top and walk or take the shuttle down the access road to the forestry house.
Go early. By mid-morning in summer the car park is full and the trail feels it.
What to expect on the plateau
The weather at Rabaçal is not the weather at the beach. Cloud, drizzle and wind are all normal at 1,300 m on a day when Calheta is in full sun, and the ground under laurel canopy stays wet. Take a rain layer and proper footwear regardless of what the coast is doing when you leave.
Check the official trail status before setting out. Madeira closes trails for rockfall and weather, and closures are not always signposted at the bottom of the hill.
