Calheta has no off season in the way a Mediterranean beach town does. The south-west is the island's driest, sunniest coast, and it is mild all year. What changes across the calendar is not really the beach. Its golden sand sits behind two breakwaters and stays swimmable in a way the rest of this coast does not. It is the plateau, the crowds and the price.
The short answer
April to June and September to November are the best months: warm, comfortable, better odds of a clear plateau, and trail slots you can still book a day or two ahead.
By season
Spring (March–June). Green, mild, and the window when the sugar-cane mill traditionally runs. The crushing season starts after Easter. Sea still cool.
Summer (July–August). The island fills for the school holidays. The coast stays comfortable rather than fierce; it is the levada car parks and the SIMplifica slots that feel the pressure. Book trails well ahead.
Autumn (September–November). Arguably the best of the year: the sea is at its warmest roughly August to October, the light is good, and the peak has passed.
Winter (December–March). Mild and green at sea level; more cloud, wind and closed trails at 1,400 m. Christmas and New Year are a genuine peak on Madeira and priced accordingly. January to March is the cheapest and quietest stretch.
Plan by altitude, not by month
The useful planning unit here is the day, not the season. The plateau at Rabaçal makes its own weather, and no month reliably delivers a clear one. Keep your levada day flexible, book the slot for whichever morning has the better outlook, and let the beach take the other. It is far less weather-dependent.

In practice it means a grey morning is a reason to swap the beach for the 25 Fontes walk, or the other way round, not a reason to write the day off.
